ABOUT LAUREN

Lauren Sorkin is the Managing Director, Asia Pacific for 100 Resilient Cities where she leads a Team of interdisciplinary professionals in work across 12 countries in the region.  She also served as Director of 100RC’s Platform of Partners bringing on more than 20 partners with a focus on providing urban solutions for emerging markets. Before joining 100RC, Lauren worked with Asian Development Bank designing climate responsive investments. Prior to this, Lauren worked on USAID’s Initiative for Conservation in the Andean Amazon and Eco-Asia Clean Development and Climate Program as well as with with the European Commission and the Worldwatch Institute where she published work on biofuels, trans-boundary water management, climate change, infant mortality and HIV/AIDS. Lauren holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Tufts University and a Master of Science in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics. She is a certified holistic health counselor and yoga instructor and a fluent speaker of both Spanish and Hebrew.

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities and is exposed to increasing risks of climate change, rapid urbanization and globalization, cities are at once our greatest threat and opportunity. Lauren speaks about how cities can build resilience to their shocks and stresses and prepare their institutions, business and citizens to survive, adapt and thrive no matter what they are facing. Lauren addresses the diverse set of issues that cities in Asia Pacific from natural disasters, to economic transitions and aging population. While speaking on the massive urbanization challenges in detail, she also offers specific responses. Lauren reflects on her experience working to build stronger government institutions across 5 continents, as well as partnerships between governments and the private sector and civil society. Lauren also addresses the need to invest in infrastructure solutions that deliver multiple benefits in cities, with a focus on delivering services to the most vulnerable.
